Read More	BROWER, JOHN ALFRED—In the death of J. A. Brower, March 16, Geneva lost its oldest citizen. Not only was he one of the oldest residents, he was one of the best known and best liked. Until he suffered a stroke two months before his death, he was on the streets almost every day visiting and joking with friends. He was "Dad" to everybody and he always had a kind word and greeting for all he met. Mr. Brower was a young man when he came to Fillmore county in an early day and lived to see the great changes in the mode of life of the people as well as the changes in the farms and towns that have come with the years. It seemed fitting that he should be borne with team and wagon, from the cemetery gates to his last resting place, this mode of travel being necessary because of road conditions in the cemetery. It was a way of travel he was much and more familiar with than the automobile and no doubt it would have given him much pleasure if he could have known his last trip would be taken in this manner. The deceased devoted most of his life to farming, being almost eighty when he moved to town. He was active in the social and civic circles of his home community and the Brower home with its large family was a center of activity. Mr. Brower's grandfather, Nicholas Brower, who died September 13, 1871, was buried in the Geneva cemetery, his being no doubt one of the first graves in that plot. John Alfred Brower, youngest son of John A. and Margaret Brower, was born at Constantine, Mich., February 10, 1853. He passed away at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Garrett, in Geneva, Neb., March 16, 1948, at the age of 95 years, 1 month and 6 days. He had made his home with the Garretts the past few years. He was united in marriage to Minnie Orpha Folwell at Fairmont, Neb., May 20, 1882. To this union were born fifteen children, two dying in infancy. Twelve of those surviving were at his bedside when he passed away and all were present for the funeral services. Mr. and Mrs. Brower resided on farms seven miles northwest of Geneva, forty-nine years, thirty-nine of these years being spent on the farm they purchased half a mile north of the farm they moved onto after their marriage. They moved to Geneva seventeen years ago to make their home. Mrs. Brower preceded him in death, October 13, 1943. They observed their sixty-first wedding anniversary May 20, 1943. Mr. Brower leaves to mourn his departure the following children Mrs. Effie Lovejoy of Red Cloud, Neb., Mrs. Bonnie Berger of Omaha, Neb, Harry B. of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., Mrs. Bertha Larson of Antioch, Ill., Mrs. Florence Chesnut of Mokena, Ill., Russell of Rupert, Idaho, and Mrs. Bessie Miller, James Henry, Thomas A., Mrs. Edna Garrett, Franklin E., Mrs. Mildred Fisher and Howard, all of Geneva, Neb. Also surviving are twenty-nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, six nieces, other relatives and a host of friends. All knew him as a loving and affectionate father and a kind friend. We miss him in his humble home And by the hearth's fire light, And pause beside the open door to hear his sweet "Goodnight." Fold him O Father in thy arms and let him henceforth be A messenger between Our broken hearts and Thee. Funeral services were held at the Geneva Methodist church at 2:30 Friday afternoon with Rev. Ben F. Wallace officiating. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. Pallbearers were Ed and William Watmore, O. A. Robbins, Charles McFadden, Harry Ward and Harry Garrett. Among the relatives from away attending the services were Owen Lovejoy of Red Cloud, Henry Berger of Omaha, John Larson of Antioch, Ill., Edgar Chesnut of Mokena, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Donald Berger of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Max Lovejoy and Mrs. Warren Rocole of Lincoln, Herbert Gibson and Mr. and Mrs. John Gibson of Omaha, Mrs. Lillian Brower of Hastings, Mr. and Mrs. Bliss North of Hansen, and Billy Williams of Lincoln.
