McDONALD, MILDRED ORPHA—Mildred Orpha Brower Fisher McDonald was born to John Alfred Brower and Minnie Orpha (Folwell) Brower on Dec. 29, 1905, southwest of Fairmont, one of 15 children in the family. She passed away on Feb. 4, 2002, at the Hearthstone Nursing Home in York, at the age of 96 years, one month and six days. Mildred received her eighth grade education at District Number 18 in Fillmore county, southwest of Fairmont. She was married to James Henry Fisher on Nov. 20, 1926, in Belleville, Kan., and to them three daughters were born; Norma Lee, Delores June and Joann Elaine. Following their marriage, they resided in Geneva. James died in 1943, leaving Mildred to raise her three daughters by herself. During the war years (WW2), Mildred worked at the Fairmont Air Base. For many years, she cared for Isabel Bixby at Mildred’s home. She took employment at many different places in order to provide for her family. She owned and operated a café on the southeast corner of Main Street and U.S. Highway 81 in Geneva, and later worked for the Hested’s store for 17 years until her retirement. On Aug. 4, 1957, Mildred married Harold McDonald in Lushton. They made their home in Geneva until his death in 1974. Following Harold’s death, she moved to York to be near her daughters. With the help of her daughters, she was able to maintain her own home until August, of 2000, when she moved to the Hearthstone Nursing Home. Mildred’s favorite pastime was crocheting afghans for her family and friends and all told, she made over 100 of them. Mildred was a very strong and independent woman, who raised her three daughters in the hard times, yet she never complained over what life handed her, because her philosophy of life was “things always work out”. She was a kind and gentle woman, who spoke softly, was patient beyond description and one who never spoke cruelly of anyone. Her sense of humor endeared her to all and she maintained it throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Minnie Brower, husbands, James H. Fisher and Harold McDonald; sisters, Effie Lovejoy, Margaret Faye Brower, Bessie A. Miller, Bonnie Berger, Edna Garrett, Bertha Larson, and Florence Chesnut’ brothers, Henry, Harry, John Alfred, Tom, Russell, Frank and Howard Brower; sons-in-law, Sidney Atwood and Don Steider; and great-grandson, Bryan Christiancy. She is survived by her daughters, Norma Lee Christiancy, Delores Atwood and Joann Melton and husband, Jim; step-son, Richard McDonald and step-daughters, Eleanor Koahler and Kay McDonald; grandchildren, Gary and wife Roberta Christiancy, Richard Christiancy and wife, Kaye and Kathy Fletcher, James Fletcher and Karla Venable, Steve Atwood and wife, Bonnie, Jim Atwood and wife, Donna, Scott Steider and wife Renee and Doug Melton and wife Shawn and Kelly Melton. Mildred’s great-grandchildren surviving are Melinda and Josh Christiancy, Jennifer and Justin Christiancy; Trisha, Travis and Tyson Atwood; Brandon, Brett and Kendra Atwood; Lesley Lindey and Lori Steider; Brooke, Austin and Isaac Melton; great-great grandchildren are Bryanna and Taylor Christiancy; Katy Venable; James Fletcher; and Mina Steider; sister-in-law, Rosella Brower; also surviving is special friend, Mike Batterton. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 8, from the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva with Rev. Jo Harper officiating. Musical selections were “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,” “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” Casket bearers were Gary and Richard Christiancy, Scott Steider, Doug Melton, Steve Atwood, Mike Batterton and Jim Fletcher. Honorary bearers were Kathy Fletcher and Kelly Melton. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal February 13th, 2002 page 15.
