Read More	GARRETT, EDNA MARIE—Edna Marie Brower Garrett was born to John Alfred Brower and Minnie Orpha (Folwell) Brower on April 21, 1902, at rural Fairmont. She passed away on Jan. 18, 1997, at Fairview Manor in Fairmont, at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 27 days. She was one of 15 children in the family. Edna received her eight grade education at District No. 18 in Fillmore county, southeast of Fairmont. She then assisted her family with the farming chores along with helping with domestic work at neighbors’ homes until her marriage. Edna was married to William “Pete” Garrett of Geneva, on Nov. 15, 1923, and to them two children were born, son Gerald Dean and daughter, Janet Ann. Following their marriage, they resided on the Garrett home place north of Geneva. They later moved into Geneva where Edna remained for 53 years. Due to failing health, she became a resident of the Fairview manor in Fairmont for the past two years. During the war years Edna worked at the Fairmont Air Base. She also did other family’s laundry in her home. She was a babysitter for many in the community and many of the children she sat for, lovingly called her “Grandma”. She also helped in the care of children in the Congregational Church’s nursery for many years. Edna enjoyed caring for her flowers at her home and spent much time reading and doing word puzzle games, until failing eyesight made this most difficult. Much time was spent on the front porch that was next to Main Street, where she could watch the traffic and wave at friends who drove by. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching Nebraska football and catching the K.C. Royals baseball games on the radio. When the weather was conducive, she enjoyed walking downtown on Saturdays to eat lunch and visit with old friends. In her youth she enjoyed playing the family piano, which in later years she recalled as being in the family parlor. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Star Rebekah Lodge No. 8 and the South Madison Extension Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Minnie Brower; husband, Pete Garrett, son, Dean and daughter-in-law, Charrlotte Garrett; sisters, Effie Lovejoy, Margaret Faye Brower, Bessie Miller, Bonnie Berger, Bertha Larson, Florence Chestnut; and brothers, Henry, Harry, John Alfred, Tom, Russell, Frank and Howard Brower. Edna is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Stuart Vavra; sister, Mildred McDonald; sister-in-law, Rosella Brower, granddaughters Shelby (Vince) Lemke, Jana (Billy) Slezak, and Jodene (Tom) Lovegrove; great-grandchildren, Brint and Lisa Lemke, Brian Lemke, Shane, Shawn and Taylor Slezak, and Whitney Lovegrove; great-great-granddaughters, Sarah and Desiree Lemke; many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21, from the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva with the Rev. Wanda W. Bennett officiating. Musical selections were “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace” and were programed by the National Music Systems. Casket bearers were Vince Lemke, Billy Slezak, Tom Lovegrove, Tim Conway, Mark Reinsch, and Kenny Hofferber. Honorary bearers were Brint and Brian Lemke, Shane, Shawn and Taylor Slezak and Whitney Lovegrove. Burial was in the Geneva Public Cemetery The Nebraska Signal January 29th, 1997 page 10.
