All other siblings match exactly on the records. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Columbus (Nebraska) Daily Telegram August 1961 Columbus-John Briggs, 80, of 1604 11th street, died at 9:40 p.m. Friday in St. Mary's hospital after an illness of about six weeks. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Bonaventure Catholic church with the Rev. Quentin Fullam officiating. Burial is in St. Bonaventure cemetery. A longtime resident of Columbus, Mr. Briggs was employed as a carpenter for the Union Pacific Railroad for about 37 (35?) years. He retired in 1950. He was born March 28, 1881 in Krakow, Poland, the son of Peter and Sophie Briggs. Three (?) months (?) later his family came to Duncan where he spent his early years and received his education. On Feb. 11, 1907, he married Victoria Savage at Tarnov. He operated a tavern in Tarnov for several years, after which they moved to Madison where he began work for the Union Pacific. They came to Columbus in 1918. Mr. Briggs was a member of the Holy Name society of St. Bonaventure parish and the Union Pacific Oldtimers. Surviving are his wife: five children, Mrs. Harold Mitchell of Pacific Grove, Cal., Mrs. Doug McLean of Oakland, Cal., Leonard of Fremont, Milton and Louis of Columbus; 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; three brothers, Joe of Deming, Wash., Mike of Snoqualmie, Wash., and George, also of Washington state; two sisters, Mrs. Sophie Schumacher of Bellingham, Wash., and Mrs. Helen Bailey of Concrete, Wash. John was preceded in death by a son, Edwin of Columbus, who died in 1954, by his parents of Columbus and one brother, Charles of WA state. [Note: John received his citizenship May 21, 1906 using the name "John Brygg". Columbus Telegram, 24 September 1949 Petition to change name ..."in the matter of the application of Jan Bryg, also known as John Brygg, to change his name...to that of John Briggs..." Note: This was probably done so he would meet the requirements of Social Security. The middle name "Frank" may have also been added at this time on his application.
