"My grandfather, John Galvin, a pioneer and early developer of Centralia and the surrounding area was born May 1, 1858 in Vermont. He migrated West at the age of 16 and became manager of the Ezra Meeker hop farm in Puyallup. He came to Centralia in 1884 and was the first to raise hops in Lewis County on a 22 acre farm north of Centralia. He then started a real estate business in downtown Centralia when at that time there were only three stores in the town. John Galvin was the founder of the town of Lincoln, renamed Galvin later in his honor. He acquired the right of way for the railroad between Centralia and Grays Harbor, and he was the Lewis County Treasurer in 1892 and Mayor of Centralia at two different times. He and George Washington, another Centralia pioneer, were very good friends and after Washington's death, John became the guardian of his only child, George Washington, Jr. In 1890 John Galvin and Rose Slack, daughter of George Slack, were married. They had 3 children, Lawrence F., Mary (Mrs. Ansel Poundstone) and, George Jay Galvin." ----- more later The Chehalis Bee-Nugget (Chehalis, WA) Friday, April 6, 1923 "JOHN GALVIN DIES Word was received in Chehalis and Centralia yesterday forenoon of the death of John Galvin, a pioneer respected citizen of Centralia. Death occurred in a hospital at Seattle where he had gone for treatment. Mr. Galvin was getting ailing in years, and had been in poor health for some time. He was prominent in Lewis county, having held many public offices, including mayor of Centralia. He is survived by his widow; two sons, George J. and Lawrence, and one daughter, Mrs. Ansel Poundstone, all of Centralia. Deceased was born in Vermont, came to Washington in 1882, and to Centralia in 1884." Also - Friday, April 13, 1923 "JOHN GALVIN Funeral services for John Galvin, pioneer of Centralia, who died last week in a Seattle hospital, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Baptist church in Centralia, Rev.
