He came here in 1868 with his parents, Henry J. and Susan Weltmer, from Buchanan county, Mo., who settled on a farm 3 miles northwest of Hiawatha, near Padonia. He remembers west of Hiawatha to Padonia, on northwest of Padonia as all prairie, with few homes scattered thruout the country. When his parents came to Brown county, Mr. Weltmer, his brother, Dan, brot 5 head of cattle from Buchanan county on foot. In early days he says he made 3 trips from the Chase ranch, then owned by James-Ebert Chase, driving hogs to market in St. Joseph, all 3 trips being made on foot. Mr. Weltmer tells many such interesting stories. He has been very active up to last year or so. He is now having trouble with his eye-sight, cataracts having formed over his eyes. He has had to give up his most enjoyable entertainment, that of reading, yet, he gets around to visit with his friends. He attended Lou Weltmer's ball game Monday afternoon. He was surprised to hear the Tigers win the series, as he thinks the Cubs have the best ball club." DEATHS Weltmer—John J. Weltmer, 89, died Thursday afternoon at home of his daughter, Mrs. George Furse, of Robinson. He is survived by 3 sons, Lieut. Col. Henry J. Weltmer, of Little Rock, Ark., Floyd, Edward Weltmer, of Hiawatha, 2 daughters, Mrs. George Furse, of Robinson, Mrs. F. C. Moore, of Hiawatha, 2 sisters, Mrs. Susie Wier[sic], of Hiawatha, Mrs. Laura Swartz, of Lincoln, Nebr., 13 grand-children, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon, Oct. 5, at 2:30 from Meeks chapel. Rev. Hugh Lomax will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Hope cemetery. —The Hiawatha Daily World (Hiawatha, KS) Fri. Oct 3, 1941, p.4. OBITUARY Weltmer—John J. Weltmer, son of Henry J., Susan Weltmer, was born Jan. 3, 1852, at Platte River, Mo. He came to Kansas in 1868, settling at Hamlin. In 1900 he moved to Hiawatha which has been his home for the remainder of his life except for the last few years. He was an interior decorator, painter. On March 10, 1875, he was married to Sarah J. Elliott at Mooresville, Mo. 5 children were born to them: W. E., Floyd D., Mrs. May Moore, of Hiawatha, Mrs. George Furze[sic], of Robinson, Henry J. at present in Little Rock, Ark. He united with the Baptist church in young manhood. Later when the Christian church was organized at Hamlin he became a member there, transferring his membership to the Hiawatha Christian church when he moved here. Mrs. Weltmer died in May, 1925. Since that time he has made his home with his children. His death occurred Thursday, Oct. 2, 1941, at the age of 89 years, 8 months, 29 days. Besides the children above mentioned, he is survived by 2 sisters, Mrs. Susie Weir, Hiawatha, Mrs. Laura Swartz, Lincoln, Nebr.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; 5 nephews; 1 niece. The funeral was held at Meeks chapel, Oct. 5, 1941. —The Hiawatha Daily World (Hiawatha, KS) Sat. Oct 11, 1941, p.2.
