Sheridan, one of Boone county's excellent corps of teachers, and a student in the Indiana University, at Bloomington, died at that place at 12:45 p.m., last Thursday, from injuries received while umpiring a game of base ball between college fraternities the afternoon previous. At the time of the accident Sheridan was standing directly behind the pitcher, in a line from third to first base. The third baseman attempted to throw a ball to first and struck Sheridan immediately back of the right ear. He fell to the ground unconscious and remained in a stupor until his death at 12:45 the next afternoon. The remains arrived in this city at 8:16 a.m. Friday, accompanied by a delegation of college friends, Prof. J.A. Woodburn, of the college faculty, and W.E. Adkins, of the Bloomington Knights of Pythias. They were met here by the family and friends and a large number of members of the local lodge of Knights, of which the deceased was a member, and escorted to the home of the deceased's mother, in Perry township, and on Saturday the interment took place at Brownsburg. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in the township, the citizens generally uniting in this expression of their esteem for the deceased and sympathy for the bereaved. John King Sheridan was the son of Pat and Kate Sheridan, and was born in Perry township, this county, June 19, 1872. His father was drowned in the canal at Indianapolis nineteen years ago. John attended the schools of his township, and became an industrious student, graduating at sixteen. He graduated from the Central Normal at Danville, attended the State Normal at Terre Haute for one term, and was closing up the second year's work at the State University. He was a brilliant student, standing high in his class. He was fond of athletic sports, genial, good humored, and ambitious. Prof. Woodburn says no student in the University was more universally esteemed. Expressions of sympathy were sent the family by the faculty, the students, and the Century Literary Club, of which he was a member. In the school room Mr. Sheridan was no less popular as a teacher, and the standard of his work was high. His home life was a beautiful expression of love and devotion. The aged mother was prostrated with grief. Three brothers -- Edward, Pat and Thomas, and two sisters -- Mena Sheridan and Julia Wiley, survive. Lebanon Pioneer June 18, 1896
