He was born November 20, 1905, in Medina, North Dakota, the son of John W. and Mary Pravda Lamach. The family moved often in John's early years, first to Alexandria, Minnesota, then to Ogema, Minnesota, and in 1913 to a farm ten miles southwest of Ryegate. In 1917 the family moved again to a homestead on Wildcat Creek in Sweet Grass County near the present Svend Mauland ranch. John's last move with his family was to a ranch on Sourdough Creek in Sweet Grass County. In the early '20's he set out on his own, working for several ranchers and farmers and operating his own threshing rig. During the winters of 1926 and 1928, John enrolled in short courses in agricultural business and mechanical work at Montana State College in Bozeman. John loved machinery. The beginning of a lifelong career and realization of his dreams as a heavy construction mechanic started in 1931 when he went to work for Winston Brothers on the road project from Big Timber to Livingston. In his long career as a heavy duty construction mechanic, he worked (often as a chief mechanic) for many contractors, including Winston Bros., Peter Kiewit Co., Morrison-Knutson Collison-Dolvin (his personal favorite), Pacific Car & Foundry Co., Stanley Arkwright Co., Barry O'Leary, Tecon Brothers, Schy & Sullivan, and finally ending his career as a field mechanic with Industrial Equipment Co. of Billings. John's career took him to major projects, including some time in Colombia and Peru, South America, and in Panama. Upon his retirement, John still pursued his love of machinery and mechanical work by restoring several mammoth tractors at Oscar's Dreamland in Billings. John Lamach and Mollie Raimes were married in 1940, making their home in Billings. This marriage lasted five years after which John continued to reside in Billings. In 1972 he married Gladys Becraft in Ponca City, Oklahoma. They resided in Billings. John was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; a stepson, Lloyd Becraft; his parents; brothers, Benjamin, Ted, Bob, Joe, Albert, Eugene, Charlie, Mike, and Eli; and sister, Elda Walker. He is survived by brothers, George of Big Timber, and Pat of Sheridan, Wyoming; sisters, Margaret Drivdahl of Big Timber, and Laura Steele of Corvallis; a step-granddaughter, Wanda Neufer of San Mateo, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Tuesday, April 1, 2;00 p.m. from the Lowry Funeral Home with the Rev. Owen Arrington officiating. Music was provided by Leslie Schiele accompanying Deanna Novotny, who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art." Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery with John and Martin Drivdahl, John Eddy, David Hathaway, Leroy Lamach, and Mike Frigon acting as casket bearers. Al Muller was an honorary casket bearer.
