Habig Jr. and he came into the world on Jan. 8, 1907, in Pfeifer, Russia, assisted by a 93-year-old midwife. At that time and place it was considered unseemly for a woman giving birth to have a male doctor in attendance. He was one of six little boys born to Katherine Elizabeth and John P. Habig Sr. During a measles epidemic four of the boys died. Leaving John and older brother Philip as the only two survivors. Michael, Clement, Alexander and Ignatius are buried in Russia. About the time the Russian Revolution was beginning, John Sr. came to the United States and got employment with the Santa Fe Railroad as a carpenter. Katherine was a small woman, 31, who knew not a word of English when she left Russia with John and Philip for the month long journey to this country. They came in steerage and had only dry fish to eat. They arrived in this country on Sept. 14, 1913. Though only six years old my dad still has vivid memories of Ellis Island. After arrival here Katherine had two girls, the first stillborn and the other now a resident of the United Methodist Home in Topeka. As a young teenager my grandpa bought a bicycle for my dad so he could deliver telegrams for Western Union. I also would like to say my dad quickly mastered the English language and has always been an avid reader. Later he and brother Philip purchased the small house in "Little Russia" for their parents. They also purchased a car together which they shared. My dad was called "the shiek of Little Russia" because he bore a resemblance to Rudolph Valentino. He even inspired a little poem among the people of his neighborhood. As follows: John Habig was fast but he didn't last as a country gal slowed him down. (My mother who was his wife for 62 years before her death in 1990.) They also lost their only son Jim in 1989. Philip died in 1970, the father of 14, and 12 still surviving. All became U.S. citizens. My dad in 1939. He also worked until his retirement from Santa Fe. Topeka Capital-Journal, 10/31/1999 by Roberta Chariba ------------------- John P. Habig Jr., 97, Topeka, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004. He was born Jan. 8, 1907, in Pfieffer, Russia, the son of John P. and Katherine Elizabeth Oberst Habig Sr. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Topeka. He was employed by Western Union Telegrams, McEntire Bedding Co. and later the Santa Fe Railway from 1942 until retiring in 1974. On Aug. 7, 1928, he married Edna A. VanHole in Topeka. She preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 1990. He also was preceded in death by a son, James Carl Habig, on July 22, 1989. Survivors include two daughters, Roberta H. Chabira, Topeka and Marguerite J. Arguello, Fairfield, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Topeka. Mr. Habig will lie in state after noon Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Topeka.
