(also known as "Melvin"). b. about 1849, in Snyder Co. PA. A cabinet maker at the Buchanan Cabinet Works. m. He married Rachael A. Tennant, on Feb. 25, 1880, in Berrien Co. MI. They lived in Monroe, Monroe County Michigan in the 1900, 1920, and 1930 census'. --- 3. Jerome Sylvester Beistle. b. Sept. 15, 1850, in Snyder Co. PA. m. Alice L. Hagly, on Dec. 24, 1882, in Berrien Co. MI. d. Feb. 15, 1898, in Buchanan, MI. Jerome is buried here in the Oak Ridge Cemetery. (His wife Alice is not buried here). -------------------------- Joseph P. and Jerome S. Beistle were both artists at stone cutting, working with marble and granite. They owned the "Buchanan Marble Works", in Buchanan, Michigan, located at the N.-W. corner of South Oak Street and Charles Court. They made many of the headstones located in the old section of the Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Buchanan, MI, as well as the Civil War Memorial Momument in the Oak Ridge Cemetery. All four of the Beistle sons lived in Buchanan, Michigan. ----------------------------- Note: For five years, James Edgar French [the son of Titus French Sr. and his wife Betsy (Thayer) French], was associated with the "Buchanan Marble Works", in partnership with Joseph P. Beistle (after Joseph's brother Jerome S. Beistle had passed away). [The "Beistle and French" marble dealers, of Buchanan, Michign are listed in the 1904 directory]. _________________________________ John W. Beistel enlisted in the Civil War, at the age of 19, becoming a private in Company F. 131st Penn. Vol. Inf. in 1862. He served there for 9 months, and then he re-enlisted in the 208th Regiment of Penn. Volunteers, Company C., with whom he continued until the end of the war. He was promoted to Musician in Company C. on Oct. 2, 1864. -------------------------------- After the war he worked in a sawmill at Selinsgrove in Snyder Co. PA, and in 1866, he took up the study of dentistry, which he afterward practiced in that town until 1878, when he removed to Buchanan, MI. He retired in 1890. ---------------------------------- John W. Beistle served as the Commander of the William Perrott Post # 22, of the Grand Army of the Republic Lodge, in Buchanan, MI as well as numerous other offices between 1883 and 1906. ------------------------------- He also purchased a farm of 80 acres in Weesaw Township, Berrien Co. MI which he increased to about 600 acres over time. He also had 100 acres in Bertrand Township, and 15 dwellings in Buchanan, MI, and some real estate in South Bend, Indiana. He has also served as Vice-President of the First National Bank, of Buchanan, MI for about seven years. ----------------------------- John came from Selingsgrove, Snyder Co. PA., to Berrien Springs, Berrien County Michigan in 1871, then to Buchanan, Berrien Co. MI in 1890. ---------------------------------- m. # 1. John W. Beistle was first married on Sept. 16, 1873, in Berrien County Michigan, to Phebe Ann Long, the daughter of Isaac Long and his wife Susanna Ann Rough, who were natives of Pennsylvania, before coming to Berrien County MI. Phoebe was born in Bertrand township, Berrien County Michigan in 1852, and she died on Dec. 29, 1879. --------------------------- John and Phebe had 3 children: -------------------- 1. Elmer Isaac Beistle (a dentist in South Bend, IN). b. June 19, 1874, in Berrien Springs, MI. m. Sarah MABEL Schrop, on Feb. 10, 1901. (Berrien County Record, 2/21/1901). Children: Arthur, and Jeannette Beistle. 1920 census, living in South Bend, IN. ---------------------------- 2. Jennie Beistle. b. April 4, 1876, in Berrien Springs, MI. m. Ralph E. Jennings, of Paw Paw, MI, on Dec. 16, 1897 (Berrien County Record 12/16/1897). d. March 14, 1972, in Ingham Co. MI. Buried: Prospect Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw, Michigan. ------------------------------ 3. Clayton ("Clay") W. Beistle (a dentist in Schoolcraft, MI). b. Jan. 18, 1879. d. Oct. 13, 1953. Buried: Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor, Michigan. ____________________________ m. # 2. John W. Beistle was married the second time, to Mary Amanda Burrus (known as "Amanda"), of Dayton (on the South side of Buchanan, Michigan), on Nov. 9, 1881, at the home of the brides mother, near Dayton, Michigan, (South Of Buchanan), by Rev. J. F. Bartmess. Amanda was the daughter of James Burrus and his wife Jennette Holmes. Marriage announcement published in the "Berrien County Record" newspaper, on Nov. 10, 1881. _____________________________ Phebe died on Dec. 28, 1879 (per her headstone). [Note: Berrien County death records state that Phebe died in Buchanan township, on Dec. 29, 1879]. Note: The obituary for Phebe was published on Dec. 31, 1879. Phebe died at the age of 28 years, 3 months, and 8 days (per her headstone). Phebe is buried in the Portage Prairie Cemetery. ------------------------------ John was a Mason, a musician, and a dentist. ------------------------------ John also served as the treasurer and as a clerk of Buchanan Township. -------------------------------- The 1899 Directory for Berrien County Michigan, shows John W. Beistle and wife, living at 78 Days Avenue, in Buchanan, Michigan. He also had a business of bicycles, and bicycle repairs. It states the following. Bicycle Dealers: Beistle, John W., bicycle repairs, 44 Front Street. Buchanan Cycle Co. 10 Front Street. ------------------------------ John W. Beistle is listed as having a bicycle business and as being a dentist, in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, in the "Michigan State Gazetteer and Business Directory". ------------------------------- Note: See article on John W.
