Layton, 84, lifelong Hamilton County resident, died at 8:50 Friday evening at his home near Bell's Mill. He had been in failing health the past two years, but had been bedfast the past week. Burial was made at Oakwood Cemetery at Stratford. Mr. Layton was born at Hook's Point December 4, 1866 and had spent his entire life in Hamilton County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Idella Layton, and four children, Frank of Stratford, Harold of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Orville (Jennie) Elsberry of Lehigh, and Mrs. Tom (Clara) Madsen of Webster City. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 6 step children, 22 step grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Theresa Hook of Boise, Idaho, and Mrs. Eva Angstrom of Stratford also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. The family requested that no flowers be sent to the services. Remembrances were contributed to the Hamilton County Hospital fund. Webster City Daily Freeman Journal May 14, 1951 OBITUARY J.W. LAYTON J.W. Layton, son of Benjamin and Mary Jane Layton, was born at Hook's Point on Dec. 4, 1866 and died at his home near Bells Mill Friday evening, April 27, 1951, at 8:50 o'clock. Death was caused by leukemia and complications incident to old age. His age was 84 years, four months and 23 days. All his life he lived in Hamilton county in the Hook's Point and Bells Mill vicinity. For the past 39 years he lived in his home near Bells Mill. He was united in marriage with Amanda Johnson at Stratford on April 23, 1901. To this union four children were born: Frank of Stratford, Harold of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Orville (Jennie) Elsberry of Lehigh and Mrs. Tom (Clara) Madsen of Webster City. On Oct. 18, 1928 he was united in marriage with Mrs. Idella Frakes. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Oscar and Howard. He is survived by his widow, two sisters, Mrs. Eva Angstrom of Stratford and Mrs. Thressa Hook of Boise, Idaho; the four above named children, and 10 grandchildren. Also surviving are six step-children: Mrs. Leslie (Marie) Harris of Independence, Wayne and Melvin Frakes of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Peter (Hazel) Claude of Williams, Mrs. Franklin (Kathryn) Crawford of Stratford, Mrs. Dick (Mildred) Gabrielson of Callander; 22 step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Foster funeral home at 1:30 Monday afternoon with the Rev. C.F. Schmidt of Stanhope, retired pastor of the Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery near Stratford. For his text, Rev. Schmidt chose the 14th verse of the 14th chapter of Job: "If a man die, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come." Mr. Layton was one of the early pioneers of Hamilton county and as such he endured the hardships and sacrifices of the early settlers. He watched the rise of the little hamlet of Hook's Point to a place of importance in the history of Hamilton county and saw its sudden decline as the railroad, on which he helped lay ties came through bringing progress and charge to the community. He shared also in the change from horse-drawn vehicles and farm machinery to the present modern mechanical age. He saw the swamps and blue stem grass of the prairie yield to the present fertile farms and homesteads. He maintained until the end a lively interest in the affairs of his country and community, enjoyed his home, family and friends, depending on his radio for entertainment and news of the outside world as waning strength curtailed his activities. He was in failing health the past two years but was bedfast only one week. His courageous spirit in the face of mounting difficulties, his patient and humorous acceptance of them was a challenge to all who knew him. He loved his violin and was one of the last of the genuine old time fiddlers. He loved the woods and the hills surrounding his home and often expressed the wish that he might live there until his change would come. Because of his long residence in the Bells Mill community, he had many friends who, with his family, will greatly miss him from their midst. His father was a part-time Methodist minister. At one time Mr. Layton was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. Clayton Kent of Goldfield sang "In the Garden" and "When We Come to End of a Perfect Day." Pallbearers were Melvin Frakes, Leslie Harris, Peter Claude, Franklin Crawford, Paul and John Leaf. A total of $31.75 in remembrances were given to the fund for the new addition to the hospital in memory of Mr. Layton. Mrs. Frank Mango of Chicago, also made a gift of $25 to a Children's Home there in memory of Mr. Layton.
