He died Sept. 12, 2000, at a Kettering, Ohio, nursing home. Dr. Michaelis was a professor of chemistry at the University of Dayton for more than 30 years, and he was appointed professor emeritus in 1988. He also advised pre-med and pre-dental students at the university for 36 years. He was the faculty adviser for the American Chemical Society UD Student Affiliate for 33 years, and he was the adviser to the Alpha Epsilon Delta honor society until 1990. Dr. Michaelis also did laboratory research for the Air Force regarding metals used in jet engines. He also taught at the University of Florida in 1953 and 1954. He was born May 11, 1918, in Paxico, Kan., the son of John H. Michaelis Jr. and Rosa Glotzbach Michaelis. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1945 and a master's degree in 1947, both at The University of Kansas. He earned a doctorate at the University of Florida in 1953. Dr. Michaelis was a finalist judge for the Dayton Metropolitan High School Science Fair for many years and a longtime speaker at Career Days in high schools in the Dayton area. He served on the University of Dayton Faculty Forum, which became the Academic Senate, and the Promotions Committee. He also was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Dayton. Survivors include three brothers, Hubert "Jim" Michaelis and Walter Michaelis, both of Topeka, Kan., and Francis Michaelis, Kansas City, Mo.; and three sisters, Elsie Renyer and Roberta Kraus, both of Topeka, Kan., and Mildred Sims-Gipe, Redwood City, Calif. Later memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home in Topeka, Kan. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Dr. Michaelis will lie in state at the funeral home in Topeka after 8 a.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marian Clinic, 1001 S.W. Garfield Ave., Topeka.
