In Germany, Ed received his formal education and worked in a factory as a shoemaker. At the factory, he met Anna Teresia Hoesel, who was employed there. Read More	Karl Oskar Edmund Hoger was born the 23rd of December 1869 in Nether Hermersdorf, Chemnitz, Saxony, Germany. He was the son of Karl August and Emilie Ottilie (Hurtschel) Hoger. In Germany, Ed received his formal education and worked in a factory as a shoemaker. At the factory, he met Anna Teresia Hoesel, who was employed there. Ed and Anna were married the 6th of June 1892 in Chemnitz, Germany. On or about the 1st of March 1897, Ed arrived at the Port of New York in the United States of America on the Denver Rine Ship. He arrived the 22nd of March 1897 in New Salem, North Dakota. While Ed was there he worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad on the section. Six months later, he returned to Germany to get his wife and family. While Ed was gone one child was born and buried, which he never got to see. Ed and Anna had six children born in Germany. After the family had saved enough money in 1902, Ed and the family, with his mother, Emilie Ottilie (Hurtschel) Hoger, prepared to journey to America. The 18th of November 1907, Ed took the oath of allegiance for citizenship of the United States. Ed worked for neighbors all over and in April 1902 took up a homestead, 12 miles northeast of New Salem, North Dakota. They built themselves a sod house and barn combined, one side was the house and the other side the barn with a partition in the middle. After 26 years as pioneer farmers, Ed and Anna retired from farming and bought the John Bloodgood home in New Salem, North Dakota in the spring of 1928. In the fall, they moved into the house. Karl or Ed as he was called and Anna had 11 children: Edwin Oskar born in 1892; Martha Olga Otilla born in 1894; Carl August , 1896; Meta Anna born and died 1897; Richard born and died 1899; Arno George, 1901; Oscar Emil, 1903; Antonia, 1904; Ottila Anna, 1906; Max Herman, 1910; and Louise Lina, 1915. Karl Oskar Edmund Hoger known as "Ed" passed away at his home in New Salem, Sunday, the 31st of August 1958 at 11:10AM following an illness of 18 months. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church of New Salem and was a member of the church board of elders. He also served as president of the Mars School District No 24 for a number of years and held an executive with the Farmers Union Mercantile Company of Judson. Funeral services were conducted from the Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in New Salem by Rev George F Steffen this afternoon Wednesday at 2:00PM the 3rd of September 1958. Ed was layed to rest in the Peace Cemetary, New Salem, North Dakota. Pallbearers were Glen Hoger, Daniel Hoger, Edward Matthieson, Jimmie Wolf, Kenneth Hoger and Dennis Hoger. Survivors, in addition to his wife, Anna include the following children; Martha (Mrs Paul Reuther), Carl, Arno, Oscar, Antonia (Mrs Fred Wolf), Otilla (Mrs Ernst Wolf), Max and Louise (Mrs Authur Matthiesen); plus 41 grandchildren and 76 great-grandchildren.
