Mrs. Olof Ericson, one of the pioneers of the Sioux valley, passed away at her home at Akron on Thursday morning, January 23, at the age of 98 years and 28 days. Oldest resident of Akron and of a wide surrounding territory, "Grandma" Ericson had celebrated her 98th birthday on December 26, and many friends had called on her at that time and others sent gifts and cards. She was then enjoying her usual health, but for the last three weeks, after incurring slight cold, she had been failing and gradually growing weaker until she slipped away peacefully. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 'o'clock at her home and at 2:30 o'clock in the Union Creek Lutheran church, with the pastor, the Rev. J. H. Larson officiating. Interment was beside her husband in the Union Creek cemetery. Catherina Johannson was born in Ange, Ofvansjo, Sweden, on December 26, 1842. There she was baptized in the Lutheran faith, and although she was unable to see to read for many years before her death, her remarkable memory enabled her to repeat the Bible verses and hymns she learned at her confirmation. At the age of nineteen she was united in marriage with Olof Ericson, and in the spring of 1869 the young couple and their son, John E., came to America. Her sister, Mrs. John Sellberg, and family had come the year before and settled on a homestead in Sioux Valley township, Union county, S.D., four miles west of what is now Akron, Iowa. Mr. Ericson homesteaded 160 acres adjoining the Sellberg farm and soon had a one-room log cabin with some homemade furniture, such as chairs sawed out of large round logs. Here they made their home in a strange land and a strange language. One thing to help make amends for friends they left so far away was that the two sisters and families could visit each other and speak their own language. Grandma Ericson lived through the grasshopper scourge, the blizzards of early days and prairie fires, when she stood with her newborn baby in her arms ready to flee to a plowed field should the cabin burn. But with hard work and a strong Christian faith she and her husband survived all these hardships and built up a fine farm home. Her husband died in 1895. Mrs. Ericson was the last charter member of the Union Creek Lutheran church. Her church and its societies, her children and their families were her greatest concern. She leaves to mourn her departure three sons and two daughters, John E. and Martin of Akron, William and Mrs. E.A. Hultgren of Sioux Valley township, Union county, and Mrs. Louise Harker of Hawarden; also twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
