Ericson William Ericson, departed. this life last Wednesday evening, April 29, 1964, at the Akron Hospital, following a brief illness. He was 91 years, 6 months and 14 days of age. Mr. Ericson was born October 15, 1872, in a sod hut in Sioux Valley Township, Union county, South Dakota, west of Akron, Iowa. His parents, Olof and Catharine Ericson, lived on a homestead that is now along what is called Spink road. When Mr. Ericson was only a little over a year old, the Union Creek Lutheran Church was organized on January 10, 1874. Thus he, together with his parents, became charter members of the new congregation. On September 1, 1889, he was confirmed. In Union Creek Church on April 24, 1901, he was united in marriage with Miss Emma Hultgren. Pastor G.E. Lindsten officiated. They farmed in Union County until 1925, then moved into Akron for about six years. While in Akron, Mr. Ericson was in the garage business. In 1932, they moved back to the farm and he continued residence there until 1951, when he retired to Akron and lived here until his death. Mrs. Ericson died in 1949. His life span covers the years from the very early days of the virgin prairie, the sod house and homestead and the Indians until the present time. His experience included the blizzards of the 1880s, farming and threshing by horsepower, together with all the changes since then. In connection with the celebration of the Dakota Territory Centennial in 1961, Mr. Ericson was honored as a Pioneer. The parchment citation read in part: The Dakota Territory Centennial commission extends greetings and hereby declares that William Ericson is a pioneer citizen of South Dakota, and having lived in Dakota Territory during the period commemorated in this centennial year, is hereby given official recognition and tribute. This was signed by Centennial Chairmen and by the Governor of South Dakota. Also, in connection with the 75th Anniversary of the town of Akron, in 1957, Mr. Ericson rode in the parade as the only living charter member of Union Creek Lutheran Church. Thus until now he has been the only living tie with the organization of this church, which in 1964 will celebrate its Ninetieth Anniversary. Throughout the years, he has been a very active, interested member of his Church. Those who survive his departure are: his two sons, Lawrence of Akron and Milton of Rock Rapids, Iowa; his three daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Waterman of Akron, Mrs. Wilma Claeys and Mrs. Mirian Enockson, both of Sioux City; his two sisters, Mrs. Louise Barker of Hawarden and Mrs. Adina Hultgren of Akron; fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren, beside many other relatives and friends. Besides his wife, his two brothers, Martin and John, and his grandson, William Claeys, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in Union Creek Lutheran church, Rev. David J. Roy officiating. Miss Debbie Clark was soloist and Mrs. Henry Fickbohm was organist. Casket bearers were Warren Waterman, Larry Claeys, Jim Claeys, Arlo Ericson, Richard and Ronald Enockson, grandsons of the deceased. Interment was in Union Creek cemetery.
