Description	:	Lawrence Eugene Brooks, Jr., 88, of Topeka, passed away March 28, 2012, at Brewster Place. He was born July, 5, 1923, in Topeka, the son of Lawrence Eugene Brooks, Sr. and Dorothea Grace Carter Brooks. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1941. He was born July, 5, 1923, in Topeka, the son of Lawrence Eugene Brooks, Sr. and Dorothea Grace Carter Brooks. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1941. Larry was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U.S. Navy on convoy duty. While still on active duty, he was married to Naomi Jean Raine on March 18, 1944 in Topeka. After the war he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves as an aviation engineer, serving during the Korean War. Larry worked until his retirement in 1971 at the Santa Fe Shops in Topeka. He was a master mechanic, later a journeyman coach carpenter. He and Naomi were members of West Side Baptist Church in Topeka. Larry completed the Master Gardener training and was well known for his vegetable production. He shared the produce with relatives, friends, and the Topeka Rescue Mission. He made furniture and other items of wood; also remodeled many kitchens. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and by two sisters, Jacqueline Ginavan and Maxine Jacob-Kerr. He is survived by his wife, Naomi, and children Cheryl and Royce White, Berryton; Linda and Bill Phillips, Shawnee; David and Kathy Brooks, Ottawa; Craig and Linda Brooks, Auburn; and Marc and Vicki Brooks, Amarillo, Texas. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be held April 14, 10 a.m., at the chapel at Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends may meet with the family from 9:30 to 10.
