Leona was born January 6, 1921, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, to Clifford and Mabel Smith. She attended high school and was raised with a sister Ella Marie. Her first jobs were housekeeping services for others. Later in life, she worked for the Kellogg Company. She worked as a factory worker all the way up to chemist who tested the cereal product. She worked for the Kellogg Company for 32 years up until her retirement in 1977. She married husband Ronald Moats on July 24, 1939. He worked as a cab driver at first and later for the Union Pacific Railroad. Together they lived their married life in Council Bluffs. They were blessed with two children, Richard and Sandra. Leona led a Bible Study for shut-ins and was superintendent of the Sunday school for 10 years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Her favorite ministry was letter writing to 40 different people weekly for over a quarter of a century. She enjoyed camping with her family and fishing with husband Ronald but paid more attention to her books. They would take a month off and go fishing in Minnesota. Husband Ronald passed away in February of 1996, and when her health started to decline, she lived with her daughter Sandy for 5 years and with granddaughter Amy for 3 years. She then moved to Gold Crest, where she resided for 2.5 years until her passing. Leona is preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Richard; sister, Ella Marie.
