Description	:	Leonard L. Handke, 94 years of age, of Atchison, KS. died unexpectedly Saturday, March 27th, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., on Tuesday, March 30th, 2010 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Leonard was born on December 3, 1915 in Atchison, KS. the son of Conrad and Emma (Flaschbarth) Handke. He attended Deer Creek School, north of Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School in 1933. Leonard was a lifelong farmer-farming north of Atchison on Hwy 7. He was also a dairyman for many years. As a young man he would bottle the milk and make home deliveries to customers in Atchison. Mr. Handke was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He served on the Deer Creek School Board, was a member of the Atchison County ASCS Committee in Effingham, KS., starting in 1954. He served as Chairman of the ASCS Committee from 1957 to 1975. He was a member of the Atchison County Dairy Board and the Atchison County Farmers Union CO-OP Assn. from 1968-1983. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and bowling. Later in life he enjoyed riding around the country looking at crops and farmland. Leonard and the former Ruby Armstrong were married on June 8, 1938 in Bendena, KS. Together they celebrated 61 years of marriage. Ruby preceded him in death in June 1999. Survivors include a son; Larry (Janice) Handke, Atchison, KS., a daughter; Jeanne (Richard) Durkin, Atchison, three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. His parents, one brother; Gilbert Handke, and a sister; Ruth Handke Peterson also preceded him in death. Compliments of www.beckerdyer.com
