Singing at the funeral waas by Mrs. Lynn D. Hull accompanied by Mrs. J. L. Wheeler and in charge of the flowers was Mrs. Helen Lewis, Mrs. Ruth Johnson, and Mrs. Lorene Knudson. Pall bearers were Clyde Lewis, Clarence Strain, Carl Johnson, Raymond Knudson, Howard Clark, and Elmer Simpson, and interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were by Wolfe Funeral Home. Lester Leighton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rowland W. Watt was born in Taylor County, Iowa, March 2, 1894. He moved to Corning with his family when a small boy and in 1906 he came to Villisca where he attended school, graduating from Villisca High School in 1914 and that fall entered Grinnell College where he graduated in 1919. He served with the Mayo Hospital Unit in France with the American Expeditionary Forces in World War 1. After his discharge from military service he stated his teaching career in the Kansas City schools. He met and married Florence Greer while in Kansas City. His outstanding performance in athletics in high school and college was reflected in his coaching. The fine reputation of his teams followed him as he progressed from Kansas City to Roosevelt High in Des Moines and then to his alma mater, Grinnell College. In 1942, Mr. and Mrs. Watt and their sons, James and Thomas moved to their farm near Nodaway where they have since resided. They immediately entered into the activities of the community Lester taught several years in Nodaway during the war emergency, was a member of the County Soil conservation Commission and at the time of his death was an instructor in the Veterans Farm Program. He was a member of the American Legion and the Methodist church and its board. Besides his wife Florence and his sons, James, 14, and Thomas 11, he is survived by 11 brothers and sisters; Mrs. A. W. Hadley, Winterset, Lawrence, Grinnell; Raymond, Washington D. C., Orville, Moline, Illinois; Everett, Kansas City, Kansas; Mrs. P. O. Silvara, Webb City, Missouri, Mrs. Alter Young, Prescott; Mrs. Harvey Swank, Keithsburg, Illinois; Mrs. J. F. Prather, Mrs. C. A. Penwell, and Mrs. H. L. Peters, Villisca. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Floyd. Relative to Lester’s athletic record, the Des Moines Register of last Sunday published the following. Watt First gained prominence as a quarterback of the famous Grinnell College Football Teams from 1914-1918. Before entering Grinnell, Watt starred at Villisca High and was one of several outstanding southwestern Iowa athletes who went on to fame. Beat Iowa In 1917, with such greats as Mike Austine, Lem Wires, c. O. Hoyt, Lloyd Martin, Ed Osgood, Jess Day, and others, Watt, quarterbacked the Pioneers to an unbeaten campaign, including a 10-0 triumph over Iowa. The same season he was selected by Sec. Taylor sports editor of the Register, as an all state quarterback and member of an all star team that whipped the Camp Dodge, Iowa army training center club, 6-0 in a post season contest. After his graduation in 1918, Watt turned to coaching, starting at Argentine High in Kansas City, before moving to Roosevelt High of Des Moines in 1926. Watt coached Roosevelt to its first undefeated season, developing all state take, Harold “Bugs” Ely. His club tied by old West High went on to whip Indianola, Mason City, Nevada, Boone, Lincoln, East and North. The following season, Watt went to Grinnell College as head coach, a position he retained until after the 1935 season. During this stretch, Watt, who also coached track and golf and assisted in baseball, developed outstanding passing teams and performers, many now coaching in Iowa Schools. Watt, was in the sporting goods sales field for several seasons, but returned to coaching at Grinnell High School from 1940-1943, then retired to his farm near Nodaway.
