Helen Addie Watt was born July 16, 1895 near Corning, Iowa. She entered into rest at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center at Villisca, September 16, 1987 at the age of 92. She was the eighth of 13 children born to Viola Barton and Roland Watt. The family moved to Villisca in 1906. Helen graduated from Villisca High School in 1914 and then taught school at Swisher School south of Villisca. On August 5, 1915, she was married to Clarence A. (Bud) Powell and spent 43 years as a farm wife in the Villisca are. To this union four daughters were born. After the death of her husband, Helen sold the farm and moved to Villisca. She has resided at the Good Samaritan Center since 1981. Helen was a member of the Happy Hour Club, the Progress Club, Afternoon Literary and member of the PEO. She was chosen “Mother of the Year” of the Progress Club in 1981. She was an active member of the Villisca Advent Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Official Board, sang in the choir, and was the leader in the Women’s Mission Group. She did vocal solos in the church and the community for years. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bud, six sister, Leona Silvara, Ethel Young, Elma Prather, Nettie Hadley, Herman Swank, and Bertha Peters; five brothers, Lawrence Lester, Orville, Everett, and Floyd; a son-in-law, Keith Narigon, and a great grandson, Chris Bennett. She is survived by her four daughters and their husbands, Frances (Mrs. Neal Gray) of Villisca; Carol (Mrs. W. W. “Ike” Eichelberger) of Aurora, Illinois; Marjorie (Mrs. Charles Rucker) of Burlington, Iowa, and Patricia (Mrs. Gary Bopp) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a brother, Raymon D. Watt of McLean, Virginia; sisters-in[law, Florence Watt Mitchell of Villisca, Elsie Watt of Greeley, Colorado, and Amy Penwell App of Carpenter, Wyoming and many nieces and nephews.
