After the Battle of Shiloh the 51st and 52nd Regiments were combined into the 51st Consolidated Infantry Regiment, resulting in his discharge at Corinth, Miss. as a surplus officer. Goodspeed's History of Tennessee stated that "after a gallant leadership in the Battle of Shiloh he was taken sick and returned home, living but two days after his arrival there."
