Description	:	United States Army Officer. A native of Rhode Island, Major Eddy served as a paymaster with the United States Army Finance Corps. In July 1865, he boarded the steamer S.S. Brother Jonathan with $200,000 to be used to pay troops serving in the Northwest. On the night of July 30, the Brother Jonathan was caught in a heavy storm and sank off the coast of California. Major Eddy's remains were never recovered, and a cenotaph is placed in his memory at the San Francisco National Cemetery. Eddy took place yesterday, from Trinity Church, as announced in the Alta. A large number of citizens, who had known the gallant soldier in life, joining with the late comrades of the deceased in paying the last honors to his memory. The escort consisted of four full companies of the Eighth Infantry, C. V., under command of Major Alfred Morton. The list of pall-bearers was announced yesterday... ...That he was no coward, is shown by his death. When that frail boat pushed away from the side of the doomed steamer, the last objects on which the eyes of its occupants rested, were the forms of Gen. Wright and his lamented lady, side by side, with Lieut. Waite and Major Eddy. Many a man has been hailed hero for less fortitude than that. There, amid the wild uproar of the storm, amid the clamor of the hungry waves, howling for their prey, stood that little band, facing death, and robbing the monster of half his terrors by their calm and steady daring.
