(cremated) Marie was born July 9, 1932 in Chanute, Kansas to Jacob Albert and Hellen (Kelley) Payton. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1950. She married James P. Coates December 26, 1952 in Topeka, Kansas. After graduation Marie attended Washburn University in Topeka, KS. and she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority there, then she attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO. where she received her medical records certificate. She worked several years at the Forbes Supply Depot in Topeka, KS.. Marie also worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for a number of years. While in Topeka she loved singing in the Church Choir. The Coates moved to Joplin, MO. and she went to work for the Freeman Hospital in Joplin, She retired in 1994 Oak Hill Hospital. In 1997 they moved to Bartlesville where Marie was a member of D.A.R. and the First United Methodist Church in Bartlesville. She liked to volunteer at the Green Country Free Clinic and she enjoyed playing the piano. Mrs. Coates is survived by her husband James of the home, one son, Douglas and his wife Janice Coates of Tulsa, two daughters, Shari Coates of Bartlesville and Valarie A. Coates of Des Moines, IA., one sister, Ruth Anastas of Virginia, four grandchildren, Monica Sherman, Dylan Coates, Sarah Coates and Karen Clark, four great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob Albert and Hellen Payton. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Green Country Free Clinic at 500 SE Frank Phillips Blvd., in Bartlesville, Oklahoma 74003. Coates In a quiet early morning ceremony Friday, Miss Marie Payton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Payton, became the bride of Mr. James V. Coates, son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Coates. The Rev. John B. Covey read the double ring service in Mc-Clintock Chapel of Grace Cathedral. The couple was attended by Mr. and Mrs. Wayne C. Lowry. Members of the immediate family and a few close friends were present. The bride chose a champaigne lace and faille street-length dress with brown accessories. She wore a single strand of pearls, a gift of the bridegroom, and carried a spray of pink roses on a white Bible. Mrs. Coates, ag graduate of Topeka High School, attended Washbutn University where she became a member of Delta Gamma social sorority and served her chapter as ritual chairman. She now is employed in the Sante Fe offices. Mr. Coates, also a Topeka High graduate, now is attending Washburn University, majoring in economics. His fraternity is Alpha Delta. He is employed in the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., offices. The bride has been honored with miscellaneous showers given by Mrs. Lee Christian and Mrs. John Hinton, and with a linen shower given by Miss Bonnloyn Kinny, Miss Marilyn McQueen, Miss Patricia Bryan and Miss Marjorie Hite. Miss Shirley Deniston is planning a crystal shower to be given this week. After a short wedding trip, the couple will be at home at 241 West Ninth.
