Stricken unexpectedly in his 102 Alameda Ave home last night, Ish was dead on arrival at a Salinas hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Struve and Laporte Chapel, with Rev. A native of Los Banos (his WWI Draft registration states native of Newman), Ish attended high school in Mountain View, and was a Stanford University student before entering the hardware business in Palo Alto. He was to make that business his life's work. In 1932 Ish left Visalia to form a partnership with George C. Taylor in the Salinas Hardware Co. Eight years later he purchased Taylor's interest in the Main Street store. Ish remained sole owner of the business until 1960 when his son, Stewart, entered as a partner. A past president of the California Retail Hardware Association, Ish was also active in numerous fraternal organizations. He was a member of Salinas Elks Lodge 14, Salinas Masonic Lodge 204, and Alisal Lodge 163 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Ish was also a member of Royal Arch Chapter 59 and Reveille Chapter 47 of the Order of Eastern Star, and Pinnacle Chapter 110 of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. Ish is survived by his son Stewart B. Ish. A daughter, Shelby Ish Robinson, preceded her father in death, Survivors also include five grandchildren and two great grandchildren."
