The 69 year old Salinas man was playing golf at the Salinas Golf and Country Club when he collapsed from a heart attack. Stewart Ish - longtime downtown store owner and father of Salinas City Council member Steve Ish - learned to play golf on the course when he was a teen. Stewart Ish represented the middle generation of a family business in downtown Salinas, now known as Stewart's Housewares and gifts. The business opened in 1931 when Stewart Ish's father, Max, started Salinas Hardware. His wife said he was a civic booster. He had wanted to get into politics. But he didn't feel he had the personality for it, she said. Steve Ish said his father wore his feelings on his sleeve. His father's interest in politics rubbed off during discussions at the family dinner table. I have very fond memories the city councilman said." The Californian Tuesday August 3, 1993 Page 2B Stewart B. Ish, Salinas Resident "Stewart B. Ish of Salinas died of a heart attack Sunday while playing golf at Salinas Golf and Country Club. Mr. Ish was a native of Vasalia and had lived in Salinas for 62 years. He worked at the family business, Salinas Hardware. Following his father's death , it became Stewart's Housewares and Gifts. He retired in 1981. Mr. Ish was a 1941 graduate of Salinas High School and had attended the then Salinas Junior College. He held the rank of First Lieutenant and was a pilot in the U.s. Army Air Force during World War II. Mr. Ish was a mewmber of the Salinas Masonic Lodge No 204, the Salinas Golf and Country Club, and the Rex Ish American Post No 88 of Turlock. He was past president of the Northern California Retail Hardware Association and prior to his retirement he was active in community affairs in the downtown area. Mr. Ish is survived by his wife, Bonnie Ish of Salinas; two sons, Andy Ish and Steve Ish, both of Salinas; five grandchildren; his niece and his nephew. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Cremation took place at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity. Arrangements are under the direction of Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel."
