TOPEKAN DIES IN HOME FIRE 84 Year-Old Man Suffocated, Burned Michael Evan Brady, 84, suffocated and burned to death Saturday morning in a blaze in a former barn at 316 Lafayette where he had lived about 16 years. Firemen said cause of the fire was not determined immediately, but Mr. Brady was dead when they arrived. They said he apparently had used a wood and coal stove and an oil stove in his living quarters. * * * He lived in a portion of the former barn which fronted on an alley. They estimated damage at about $500 to the building and $500 to the contents. Walter T. Jones, 45, of 1035 MacVicar, a fireman, was injured while fighting the blaze when a container of kerosene exploded in his face. He was taken to Stormont-Vail hospital where he was treated for acute irritation of both eyes. * * * Firemen confined the blaze to the portion of the building in which Mr. Brady lived. Mr. Brady was a retired carpenter and cabinet maker. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Vernon Creitz of 1940 Bowman court, and a son, Paul E. Brady of 1032 North Monroe. The body was taken to the McMichael Memorial funeral home. Topeka State Journal, Monday, Dec. 8, 1958, page 17: Graveside services for Michael Evan Brady, 84, of 316 Lafayette, were held Monday in Memorial Park cemetery.
