Dubes was born in Allamakee Co, IA Nov 26, 1854. At the age of 17 he moved with his parents Mr and Mrs Elias Dubes to Cherokee county, making the journey in a wagon. Here a sturdy family grew up battling the hardships of pioneer life which fitting them for progress afterwards where human enterprise was steadily on the advance. Most of his life was spent in Cherokee county on the farm which his father homesteaded in 1868. On Dec 25, 1882 he was united in marriage to Miss Florence Wheeley of Buffalo, NY. They moved on a farm in the Mt Olive community where they labored together 39 years. He retired 26 years ago and moved to Cherokee to live. On Dec 25 1932 Mr and Mrs Dubes observed their 50th wedding anniversary and on Feb 16 of the following year Mrs Dubes passed away. After the death of his wife, Mr Dubes lived alone until Nov 1, 1938 when he became ill as the result of failing health and complications of old age. A nurse was engaged and cared for him until his death. Mr Dubes was a devout husband and father, as was shown in his tireless efforts to minister to the needs and comforts of his wife during her illness. During this time she was waited upon and cared for by him both day and night with unfailing devotion. After her death he was quite content to live on alone until his last illness in the home where he and Mrs Dubes had lived so happily and where he waited in the gleaming until Jan 25, 1939, when he suddenly sank into the silence and began his long rest. At the time of his death he was 84 years, 1 month, and 29 days old. Surviving are 3 sons: Elmer E of Armour, SD, Clifford C Aurelia, and R Harrison of Ore?. One daughter, Mrs Mable Neville of Aurelia, 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, a sister Mrs Margaret Juber of Mt Olive and other relatives. Friday afternoon the relatives and friends gathered at the Appleyard and Boothby funeral home in Cherokee. A brief service was held after which the body was taken to the Mt Olive Baptist church where the funeral service was conducted. Interment was in the Good Hope cemetery.
