Description	:	Michael Stump III was born in what was Hampshire County VA. He was granted a tract of land on Hacker's Creek in Harrison County VA, where he built a cabin and took his bride, Magdalene Richards. They were married February 10, 1786, by Preacher John Wade Loveborough, in Harrison County as evidenced by that county's marriage records. He was granted a tract of land on Hacker's Creek in Harrison County VA, where he built a cabin and took his bride, Magdalene Richards. They were married February 10, 1786, by Preacher John Wade Loveborough, in Harrison County as evidenced by that county's marriage records. Soon after their marriage, Michael III decided to take his bride back to his old home on the South Branch of the Potomac, because of the renewal of Indian hostilities in Harrison County. About the turn of the century Michael III began to yearn for the wilderness, because an influx of settlers made him feel crowded on the South Branch. He moved his family to Steer Creek in Harrison County in May 6, 1804. To Michael Stump and Magdalene were born: Michael IV, Sarah who married William Boggs, Jacob, Mary Magdalene who married Henry Beall, Absolom, John, George, Elizabeth who married Samuel Stout, Jemina [aka Jennia, Jemima or Jeminah] who married Seymore Norman, Temperance who married John Wolfe Stout, and Jesse. Michael III and Magdalene Stump were buried near their old home on an eminence overlooking the Steer Creek Valley near Stumptown, West Virginia. His descendants placed at his grave a monument made in the shape of a stump with the design of a gun and an ax to represent the pioneer and hunter, on May 30 1912. Note that various descendants, in applications for membership to the NSDAR and NSSAR, have declared that this Michael Stump died on 27 MAR 1834, and that Magdalene Stump, his wife, died on 11 JUN 1832, contrary to the monuments shown here, which were erected by other descendants. Though there was at one time a family Bible which presumably would settle this matter, it appears to have been destroyed or lost. See also Col. D. S.
