Westenhaver, one of the few surviving Civil War Veterans, passed away at the home of his nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Frazey, 300 East Washington Street, at 8 o'clock last night.....The body is at the Hoskins funeral home pending word from relatives. Mr. Westenhaver was born in Union County, Ohio, April 19, 1845, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Westenhaver. A few years later his parents came to Perlee where for many years the family home was made. He was the last of a family of six children. Mr. Westenhave [sic] was married to Miss Lucinda Snook, who passed away a number of years ago, also their (?) two children, a boy and a girl, have died. He was superintendent of the Sunday School at Perlee for a number of years.....Member of Company M, 4th Iowa Cavalry. Had his home with his nephew for the past four years. The source of the following note is Mary Prill, Fairfield genealogist. Note: On Henry Snook's Lot #68 a stone is inscribed: "Alice, wife of M. H. Westenhaver, Died Mar. 16, 1881, aged 29 yrs. 7 ms. 7 ds."? Apparently Alice Snook was the first wife of M. H. Westenhaver, Civil War Veteran, Quietly Celebrated at Frazey Home M. H. Westenhaver, a Civil War veteran, quietly celebrated his eighty-fourth birthday yesterday at the home of his nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Frazey, 300 East Washington street, with whom he is making his home. Mrs. Frazey prepared a tasty birthday dinner and he was presented with a prettily decorated birthday cake as a gift from the Daughters of Union Veterans. During the day a number of his friends and relatives called and offered congratulations. Mr. Westenhaver was born in Union county, Ohio April 19, 1845, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Westenhaver. A few years later his parents came to Perlee where for many years the family home. Out of a family of six children there are just two left, Mr. Westenhaver and his sister, Mrs. Jane Hurd, of this city. He was married to Miss Lucinda Snook, who passed away a number of years ago, also their two children a boy and a girl have died. When he lived at Perrlee he was for a number of years superintendent of the Sunday School there. He has always voted the Republican ticket. ---------- Davenport Democrat Davenport, Scott, Iowa October 6, 1925 JEFFERSON VETS OF FOURTH CAVALRY AT TURNER EVENT Special to the Democrat Fairfield, Ia., Oct 6- The five remaining members of Co. M., Fourth Iowa Cavalry, living in Jefferson county held a reunion today at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel B. Turner, 107 West Briggs street. The gathering celebrated the birthday anniversary of the host October 2, when he attained his 85th year. There were present, Morillo H. Westenhaver, aged 80, Alonzo J. Green, aged 80 and the host, all of this city and Gustav A. Smithberg aged 83, of Lockridge. It is a notable fact that Taylor, Smithberg and Turner were in the conflict from 1861 to the close in 1865. Westenhaver and Green, boys of 18, enlisted in 1863-64. The three sons of the host, A.C. and J.E. Turner of this city and Wilson G. Turner of Rock Island, Ill., were also present to assist their parents on this joyous occasion. Mr. Turner was born and reared in Jefferson county, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Turner, pioneer residents of this part of the state. He learned the blacksmithing trade under William Wright in Glasgow and was working at his forge when Lincoln called for volunteers.
