Richard "Ricky" Obituary ********************************************* BYRD, Paul W., 67, of Independence, Va., passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Independence, Va. He was born April 7, 1936 at Fries, Va., the Spring Valley Community, to Richard and Evelyn Semones Byrd. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Grayson County VFW Post 7726. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in the Korean Campaign from 1953 to 1956. He was a 1958 graduate of West Virginia Business College, Bluefield, W.Va., an active member of Bluefield, W.Va. Jaycees from 1958 to 1960, Bristol, Va. Jaycees from 1961 to 1964, Mt. Airy, N.C. Jaycees from 1965 to 1966 and Christiansburg, Va. Jaycees from 1967 to 1971, having served as president in 1967. He was awarded a life membership in the Virginia Jaycees in 1968 and was also listed in Outstanding Young Men of America in 1971. He served on the Independence Town Council for 16 years. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Angie and Tony Lyons of Galax, Va., Sherry and Kenneth Govin of Max Meadows, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Lynn Byrd of Independence, Va.; one grandson, Ken Govin of Max Meadows, Va.; two sisters and spouse, Ruby Byrd of Independence, Va., Geneva and Bayes Cheeks of Elk Creek, Va.; one brother, Gene Byrd of Lexington, N.C.; friends, Pat and Edgar Cornett of Independence, Va. A graveside service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Ebenezer Cemetery, Fries, Va.
