Philo Sleezer, who is well known to all old settlers of the county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Dewar, about 10 o'clock this morning of June 6th. Philo Sleezer, who is well known to all old settlers of the county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Dewar, about 10 o'clock this morning of June 6th. The 6th was his 79th birthday and the time of his death with within a half hour of the time of his birth, so he lacked but a few minutes of being exactly 79 years old. Mr. Sleezer was born in Orleans County, New York, on June 6, 1824, and departed this life June 6, 1903, in Cherokee County. After marrying Mary LeBarr of Albion in 1849, he moved west with his family, arriving in Cherokee County in 1872. He settled on a farm, but moved into Cherokee city fifteen years ago. In 1856, Mr. Sleezer commenced life for himself going from his New York home to the far west, Illinois, settling near Gridley in that state where he resided until 1873 when he again set his face westward and settled in Cherokee County, Iowa, engaging in farming which he followed until about five years ago when he retired. He located in Cherokee, Iowa, where he kept house until about three years ago when his wife died. Since then, he has lived with his children, being with his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Dewar, of Cherokee, Iowa, at the time of his death. In early manhood he was married and as a result of that union, eight children were born to them three sons and five daughters as follows: John, Charles and William Sleezer, all of this city, Mrs. Francis Biddle of Kansas, Mrs. Kate Fairweather and Mrs. Thomas Dewar of Cherokee; and Jennie Sleezer, living in South Dakota. He was a man generally respected and liked. The funeral services were held on June 8 at 11 o'clock, at the Thomas Dewar home, conducted by Rev Weston, of the Baptist church from the City of Cherokee, Iowa.
