Description	:	Phyllis Grace Sober, 87, of Kenesaw died on Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Phyllis was born Nov. 24, 1922, to Horace and Jessie Perry in Yuma, Colo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cornell Sober. Survivors are: daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Curtis Meester of Kenesaw and Kelly and Marlon Chastain of Colton, Calif.; stepchildren, Jim Sober, Joe Sober, Terry Sober, Scott Sober, Pam Miller, Karen Sober and Judy Borowski; 28 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cornell Sober. Survivors are: daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Curtis Meester of Kenesaw and Kelly and Marlon Chastain of Colton, Calif.; stepchildren, Jim Sober, Joe Sober, Terry Sober, Scott Sober, Pam Miller, Karen Sober and Judy Borowski; 28 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Phyllis moved with her parents to Nebraska at an early age. Her father worked for a grain elevator company, and so they lived in several Nebraska towns - Dorchester, Dannebrog and Ellis were among them. She graduated from Beatrice High School in 1940 and married Walter "Bud" Johnson the same year. They moved to Wichita, Kan., until Walter joined the Navy and served in World War II until 1945. When he returned, they lived in Hastings for several years and ran a drapery and venetian blind service. Phyllis worked at Hasting College and studied music at the Fuhr Conservatory at Hasting College. She taught accordion and piano in Hastings. They moved in 1960 to Grand Island, where Walter worked for a contractor and Phyllis worked for Kriz-Davis in the lighting showroom for about a year, after which she worked as a decorator for Swans Furniture Store. In 1965 she moved to San Bernardino, Calif., with her 2-year-old daughter, Kelly. Her older daughter, Judy, lived with her husband and family in Holdrege. She managed a lighting fixture showroom for 15 years in San Bernardino, Calif. In 1967, she married Cornell "Corky" Sober, who was a native Nebraskan. They returned for many visits to friends and family in Nebraska each year. In 1983, they built a retirement cabin on the Platte River near Shelton and moved back to retire there. She belonged to Beta Sigma Phi sorority and while in California she was a member of the Masonic Eastern Star. She was a member of the United Methodist church in Colton, Calif., later transferring to the Rosedale United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included gardening, decorating her home, playing the piano and accordion and enjoying her Pekinese Dog, Magoo. She enjoyed nature's wildlife and the changing seasons of Nebraska. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Jessie Perry; sisters, Doris Shafer and Elsie Jean Ellington; brother, Lloyd Perr; and epsons, Arthur and Cornell Jr. Sober.
