In 1862 Mr. Coffield, then sixteen years old, enlisted in the 93rd Battalion of Ind. Volunteers and served until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged. During his war career he engaged in five noted battles. August 18, 1869, he was united in marriage to Mary H. Cookus, of Connersville, Ind. In 1873 he homesteaded 5 miles northeast of Ada where the family has resided until some years ago when they came to Ada. To this union four children were born, two sons, one of whom died in infancy, the other in his eighth year and two daughters, Angie and Delia, the former having passed away a few weeks ago, Delia still survives. Mr. Coffield was an industrious man, and a good provider. In his business relations he was honorable, and a most excellent neighbor. By profession he was a railroad engineer for many years. During the winter he contracted the grip, and for many weeks his life was almost despaired of. Recently he underwent great sorrow. He endeavored to do his part in ministering to his afflicted daughter, when disease lingering reasserted itself, and in spite of all that could be done, he passed away, Tuesday, April 25, 1916. He was one of the oldest members of the Odd Fellows Lodge in the state. During his last illness for the most part he lay in a stupor. He was not deprived of spiritual advice. In one of his most lucid moments he assured his daughter, nurse, minister and others present that he was trusting God. Funeral services were held from the Baptist church and were conducted by Rev. Newton, assisted by Rev. McKee. The I.O.O.F. of Minneapolis had charge of the grave. A large concourse paid their last respects to this old settler and soldier.
