He was born on March 8, 1920, near East Wenatchee, WA, to C. E. and Mollie (Wine) Verbeck. Verbeck, 89, passed away on July 19, 2009, at Waterville, WA, in the home of his daughter, Latricia Stevens. He was born on March 8, 1920, near East Wenatchee, WA, to C. E. and Mollie (Wine) Verbeck. The family moved to Tonasket, WA later that year, where he attended school and graduated from Tonasket High School in 1938. Raymond worked with his father until entering Civilian Public Service during WWII. He married Bertha Longanecker on June 4, 1945. They operated a cannery at East Wenatchee for several years, before moving to Tonasket to raise apples, chickens and a family. Raymond was active in youth work, the Ellisforde Church of the Brethren and the establishment of the Washington District Camp Koinonia in Cle Elum. In 1968, as their four children finished high school, Raymond and Bertha moved to Cle Elum, WA to continue their involvement with Camp Koinonia. The development and stewardship of the Camp was to be the primary focus of Raymond, for the rest of his life. Bertha was his partner in this effort until she died in 1986, from injuries related to a car accident. Raymond married Jesse Thompson in 1987, who shared his interest in Camp Koinonia until she passed away in 1994. He continued his involvement with Camp Koinonia until 2005, when he moved to his daughter's home in Waterville, where he lived until his death. He is survived by a brother, Emert Verbeck of Tonasket; son, Kent Verbeck of Cle Elum; daughter, Latricia Stevens (Derek) of Waterville; three grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Don Verbeck, Helen Longanecker, Beth Weddle and Irene Kirkpatrick; son, Grant Verbeck; and daughter, Betty Jo Keithly. Internment will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 8, 2009, at the Mountain View Cemetery, near Ellisforde. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Ellisforde Church of the Brethren. Pastor Jim Yaussy Albright will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Heifer International, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, AR 72203 or Union Gospel Mission, 1300 North 1st, Yakima, WA 98901. Bergh Funeral Service of Oroville/Tonasket is in care of arrangements.
