He spent his youth helping with the family farm until he was drafted out of his Senior year at Abraham Lincoln High School into the United States Army in March of 1943. PFC. Roland Eugene Claar, Company A, 339th Regiment, 85th Division, 5th Army, served in Italy fighting the Germans in World War II.
