Marrying into the military-life meant moving every 1-3 years, with time spent in multiple locations. Some of those places include San Francisco, California, Corpus Christi, Texas, Kodiak Island, Alaska, & New York City, New York. During her time as a Navy wife, and later a Coast Guard, wife, she was mother, caregiver, chief cook, spiritual leader, nurturer, physical therapist & logistics specialist for her family. Church was always a foundation that Mrs. Kathy relied for both her personal life & for her family’s life. No matter which city or state they were living in, she found a church for them to be a part of. She was also sure to be teaching Sunday School every week wherever the family was living at the time. After her husband’s military retirement, Mrs. Kathy was a critical support for her husband as he pursued advanced degrees in education from both the Freed-Hardeman College and at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. During the time her husband was pursuing a higher education, Mrs. Kathy also attended both of these colleges part-time while working full-time jobs, supporting her husband, and her children. Mrs. Kathy was not one to sit still for long. Her life was filled with many varied interests. She loved sewing, photography, birds (especially hummingbirds), & gardening. Her family, friends, & neighbors benefitted greatly from her love of gardening. During her lifetime, Mrs. Kathy not only worked at the FBI, she worked at whatever was available to best enable her to provide for her family. Mrs. Kathy’s favorite occupation was caring for young children. She built relationships with the children in her care & their parents. These relationships would be sustaining for her after her husband, Bill, had passed away in 1991. After having traveled our great nation, Mrs. Kathy’s love for her birthplace & her siblings led her back to a farm in Scotts Hill, Decatur/Henderson County, Tennessee. She settled in Scotts Hill in the fall of 1991. This is where she lived out the remainder of her years. The McVey children would like to express their gratitude for their dear Mother. They wished everyone to know they could not have had a better Mother.
