The family built a smaller home for her and her sister Nell near the site of the old home overlooking the Youghiogheny River where the two lived until their deaths. Ruth's father Elijah was an uncle to Capt. Charles E. Hoye, well-known authority on Garrett County history, and for whom the highest peak in Garrett County is named. After Capt. Hoye retired as teacher in the Philippines, when not with his family in California, he spent a great deal of time in Sang Run, the location of his ancestral roots, and in the home of his aunt Mary Cornelia Hoye and his first cousins Ruth and Nell Hoye. Ruth assisted Capt. Hoye in many of his historical undertakings, He had been staying in the Hoye home for several month in the fall of 1950 working on his research with Ruth assisting him. A few days before he had planned to return to California, the Hoye house caught on fire and was destroyed. Capt. Hoye, along with neighbors were able to rescue Ruth's mother Mary Cornelia and her sister Nell, both invalids. As told by Capt. Hoye, he had packed his belongings and research papers in preparation to leave in few days and was able to save most of his research. He returned to California for the winter and a year later in November 1951 was fatally injured in Los Angeles when he was struck by an automobile as he was attempting to cross a street in that city.
