Read More	Thomas McCage was listed on the 1859 voter census at Centropolis, Franklin County, Kansas Territory. He was one person, with no family members notated. He was listed as age 41 on the 1860 Ohio, Franklin, Kansas Territory census, with his young wife, "E.," age 22, born in Pennsylvania. Several census reports list his birth in or about 1821, including the 1900 census, which lists his birth in May. Thomas McCage was listed in the 1863 Civil War draft registrations at Centropolis, Franklin, Kansas. He was also appointed the post master at Centropolis in February of 1863. By 1865, he was living in North Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas. Thomas McCage, ". . . now of Lawrence," is named in a sketch about the Franklin County attorney and legislator, Harlen P. Welsh. (Kansas Biographical Dictionary, 1879) Thomas McCage was one of the first white settlers in North Lawrence and was on the 1866 Board of Trustees. (Cutler's "History of the State of Kansas, 1883) He is listed in several census reports and city directories in North Lawrence. An 1873 land ownership map of Lawrence shows his residence at the corner of Lincoln & Maine Streets. Several city directories list his address as 333 Lincoln Street. Earlier census reports list his birth in New York, but most later reports state Ireland. His age also varies, and his first wife was probably the sister of Perry Fuller, who is buried in Washington D. C. Thomas was listed with his wife, Eliza, in North Lawrence in 1865, 1870, 1875, 1880, & 1885. They were the parents of Perry, Nellie, Olive, & Josephine. Census reports list Thomas McCage as a merchant, a laborer, a gardener, and a custodian. Cemetery records show that Thomas McCage was buried on November 10, 1903. No marker is indicated, but this cemetery flooded several times.
