Johnson, 69, of Pueblo West, Colo., formerly of Council Bluffs, passed away at home September 18, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Walter was born March 21, 1938 in Defiance, Iowa to Harry and Jean (Warrell) Johnson. He graduated from Manilla High School where he won the state high jump championship. Johnson, 69, of Pueblo West, Colo., formerly of Council Bluffs, passed away at home September 18, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Walter was born March 21, 1938 in Defiance, Iowa to Harry and Jean (Warrell) Johnson. He graduated from Manilla High School where he won the state high jump championship. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corp., he moved to Council Bluffs where he worked in construction and coached youth athletic teams in his free time. It was on the playing field where he met his future bride, Mary Etta Koch. On December 30, 1961, Walt and Mary Etta were the first couple married at the newly built Queen of Apostles Church. As his children grew, he continued to coach youth sports, including his team that won the 1976 State Baseball Championship. He was an active supporter of St. Albert's, where all four of his children attended. He began his professional career with Chevron Chemical Company in 1964. After working his way up to plant manager in Council Bluffs, he was transferred to regional offices where he worked as a distribution specialist. Walt retired after nearly three decades with Chevron and he and Mary Etta moved to Pueblo West, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Jean (Warrell) Johnson; brothers, Lawrence, Gerald, Leo and Bob Johnson. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Mary Etta; four children and their spouses, Steve and Susan; Greg and Margie; Denise and Gary; Joe and Liz[16 grandhildren]: Abby and Nick; Paul, Allison, and Eric; Stephanie, Shelby, Serra, and Kiley; Andy, Charlie, Dyana, Cecy, Eric, Claudia, and Karla. He is also survived by brother, Leonard and spouse Martina; and sister, Trudy Kirchner [died 2009]; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held in Pueblo, Colo., with interment at St. Joseph's cemetery in Council Bluffs. A memorial fund has been established at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home to benefit St. Albert's High School.
