He died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Wahlmeier taught school in the Hoyt area the past 26 years. He taught health, physical education and driver's education, and he coached at Royal Valley Middle School and Royal Valley High School. He earlier taught a year in McCracken Grade School. He also served on the Mayetta City Council and the Fire District Board in Mayetta. He served in the Army 504th Military Police Battalion in the Vietnam War. He served in the Army National Guard from 1972 to 1992 with the 995th Maintenance Co. in Jays. He was senior instructor at the Kansas Military Academy in Salina and he was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War in 1991. He was born May 24, 1946, in Clayton, the son of Lawrence and Agnes Noel Wahlmeier. He graduated from Jennings High School in 1964. He earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education, and a master's degree in administration at Fort Hays State University. Mr. Wahlmeier was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton, National Education Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Hays. He married Mary Glassman on Feb. 12, 1971, in Hays. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Greg Wahlmeier, St. Paul, Minn., and Travis "T.J." Wahlmeier, Hays; two daughters, Kimberly Feldkamp, Topeka, and Sara Wahlmeier, El Dorado; his mother, Agnes Wahlmeier, McPherson; six brothers, Dennis Wahlmeier, Cambridge, Neb., Larry Wahlmeier, Clay Center, Roger Wahlmeier, Norton, Jerry Wahlmeier, Sharon Springs, Brian Wahlmeier, Ellinwood, and Jeff Wahlmeier, Clayton; and four sisters, Doreen Zimmerman, Sioux Falls, S.D., Carol Carter, Dresden, Linda Spresser, Selden, and Debra Campbell, Kilgore, Texas. Burial with military honors will be in Prairie Home Cemetery north of Topeka. Mr. Wahlmeier will lie in state after 10 a.m. Sunday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton, where a rosary will be recited from 2 to 2:30 p.m. and visitation will be until 5 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Wayne L. Wahlmeier Memorial Fund to be designated later and sent in care of the funeral home.
