Deacon Gates, 76, Topeka, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 1990, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Gates was a self-employed electrician. He served in the Navy in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1945 during World War II. He was born May 24, 1913, in Valley Falls, the son of Guy V. and Hattie Schindler Gates. He was graduated from Meriden High School in 1932. Mr. Gates was a member of and helped organize Bicentennial Post No. 225 of the American Legion in Ozawkie. He was also a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union No. 226, Philip Billard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1650 , La Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux voiture, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 555 and Benevolent and Protective Order of Eagles Aerie No. 58. He married Jean V. Barrett Nov. 14, 1965, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Sherry D. Beck, Overland Park; a son, Richard A. Gates, Grantville; a stepdaughter, Susan Sehorn, Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepson, Ted Noah, Torrance, Calif.; a brother, C.G. "Pete" Gates, Lawton, Okla.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hope Chapel. Philip Billard VFW Post No. 1650 will conduct graveside services at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Gates will lie in state from 8 a.m. today until 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Newcomer-Diffenderfer Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association, P.O. Box 4426, 66604, or American Heart Association, 5375 W. 7th, 66606.
