He was born April 21, 1924, in Havensville, the son of Roy B. and Lois (Rosean) Hammond. He married Mary L. Box on Aug. 29, 1942, in Topeka. She preceded him in death in June 1996. He was born April 21, 1924, in Havensville, the son of Roy B. and Lois (Rosean) Hammond. He married Mary L. Box on Aug. 29, 1942, in Topeka. She preceded him in death in June 1996. Bill had worked at Morrill Packing, Hills Packing Co., and manager of Site Oil in North Topeka. He later was owner of Bill's Delivery and Ace Mail Service until he retired in 1983. He returned to work on July 16, 1998, as a door greeter for Wal-Mart Super Center on Wanamaker. He loved the interaction between customers and with his fellow employees. Bill would go to the bank and get a roll of the new state quarters each time they came out and would pass them out, making sure everyone had a new quarter. He also baked at least two cakes a week so co-workers could enjoy them at work. He also enjoyed woodworking very much. Bill served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Hammond lived in Perry for more than 15 years before his health failed. He then moved to Topeka to live with his daughter and son-in-law. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Carter and her husband, Danny, Topeka; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Chuck and Bob Hammond, both of Texas; and two sisters, Jeanie McDonald, Topeka, and Della Husa Sims, of Nebraska. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Ace Hammond, on Jan. 18, 1962; and brothers, LeRoy and Darwin; and his sister, Donita Hanneman. Funeral services and interment were at Davidson Funeral Home. Interment followed in Prairie Home Cemetery northwest of Topeka. The family received friends at the funeral home. Memorials to Midland Hospice Care, Inc.,Topeka. Published in Topeka Capital-Journal on December 30, 2003.
