Read More	Glasco Sun, May 31, 1923, page 1: "DADDY" HARE PASSED AWAY LAST SATURDAY Pioneer farmer and Businessman Succumbed After Long Illness The death of William Burk Hare, which occurred last Saturday morning at the home of his son Roscoe, south of town, brought to a close the life of a Glasco pioneer merchant and farmer. Coming to Kansas in 1870, he homesteaded south of Glasco and endured the hardships and helped overcome the difficulties which confronted the "trail blazers." He was also one of the pioneer merchants of the community, establishing a store here in the early days, going back to his farm when he disposed of his business, where he remained until about 1910. Late in life he became interested in life insurance, and showing a marked talent for this line of business, he soon worked his way to the top rank among insurance salesman, and was designated as general Agent for the Kansas City Life Insurance Co., with which he had affiliated. After having worked with him in the field and met with him in convention, the employees of that company in the spirit of good fellowship and in recognition of his signal success, despite his years, called him "Daddy" Hare, by which name he was known to all of them. He was also held in high esteem by the officials of the company, the president, Mr. J. B. Reynolds, upon notification of his death, wired: "W.B. Hare was one of God's noblemen, a true friend, and it is with deep regret that we note his passing. Please convey to his family our sincere sympathy in this hour." Mr. W.C. Jones, general manager, also wired: "It is with deep regret that I learn of the death of our mutual friend, "Daddy" Hare. Please express to the family my most sincere sympathies." And the sentiment expressed by these two gentlemen is about what the community feels. Mr. Hare, even during his prolonged illness, was a hard worker for the old home town, and never missed an opportunity to proclaim its virtues, and was likewise a friend to all the townspeople. We join the many, many friends in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved children, and sisters. William Burk Hare was born in Noblesville, Indiana, September 19, 1850, and died at Glasco, Kansas, May 26, 1923, aged 72 years, 8 months and 7 days. When very young he moved with his parents to Savannah, Missouri, where he grew to manhood. In the year of 1870 the family came to Kansas, the deceased homesteading a farm three and one-half miles south-east of Glasco. He was united in marriage, November 27, 1872, to Olive Eliza Armstrong, at Concordia, Kansas. To this union were born six children, two of whom died in infancy. The wife passed away September 24, 1894. Mr. and Mrs. Hare united with the Christian Church in the early eighties. He was for many years a merchant of Glasco in the pioneer days. Disposing of his interests in town, he returned to the farm where he remained until about 1910, when he associated himself with the Kansas City Life Insurance Company, and had since devoted his time to the insurance business. The deceased is survived by four children: Pearl W. of Toronto, Kansas; Mrs. Hoy Smith of Greenleaf, Kansas; Roscoe H. of Glasco; and Mrs. W.H. Lewis of Atchison, Kansas. He also leaves seven grandchildren; and five sisters: Mrs. Noah Welsh of Salem, Oregon; Mrs. Carl Goff of Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. John White of St. Louis, Missouri; Mrs. Henry Sheets of Glasco, Kansas; and Mrs. Chris Emrick of Miltonvale, Kansas. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the First Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Rollyn Kaiser of Beloit. Glasco Lodge, 292 A.F. and A.M. of which the deceased was a member, conducted the burial services at Glasco Cemetery where interment was had. ********************************************************** Cloud County Cemetery Book, Volume 4, page 154
