Description	:	William was the son of James A. McDaniel, Sr. and Martha Ann (Edwards) McDaniel. No one knows what the C. stands for in William's name. William was born in Marion County, South Carolina which is now Dillon County. William C. Preston was the first of his brothers to enlist in the Civil War at the age of 18. He enlisted for three years at Camp Pickens, near Sandy Springs in the Anderson District of South Carolina on the 20th of July 1861. He was assigned to Company "H" Orr's Regiment of Rifles. William was born in Marion County, South Carolina which is now Dillon County. William C. Preston was the first of his brothers to enlist in the Civil War at the age of 18. He enlisted for three years at Camp Pickens, near Sandy Springs in the Anderson District of South Carolina on the 20th of July 1861. He was assigned to Company "H" Orr's Regiment of Rifles. "H" Company was then under the command of Captain George M. Fairlee. This regiment had ten line companies, and was sent to aid in the defense of Charleston in the month of August 1861. While on Sullivan's Island, William Preston contracted fever and was sent to Roper Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. William Preston died in Roper Hospital. William Preston was brought back for burial in the Locke-McDuffie-McDaniel Cemetery where later his parents and other brothers that were killed in the Civil War are buried. After William Preston enlisted to fight in the Civil War, four more of his brothers enlisted. Alexander, James A. Jr., Joseph and Benjamin Franklin. Only two brothers survived the war. James A.
