The Coulsons with their family of six, one girl and five boys, made the wagon for their trip out of boards 3 feet wide and sawed from a big popular log. This pioneer family settled in Section of 29 of Taylor township on Nov. 2, 1850, on the land now owned by C. F. Turner. Mr. Coulson purchased his claimed from Henry Callen in 1851 and made his home there until his death on May 9, 1887. Just two years after their arrival in Appanoose county, on Dec. 28, 1852 Mrs. Coulson died and was buried in New Hope cemetery. Her body was the first to be interred in that cemetery. Mr. Coulson married again in January 1854. His second wife was Miss Martha Kinser. To them were born nine children, five boys and four girls, six of whom now live in Appanoose. To the oldest son, F. P. Coulson has descended the original claim purchased by his father. The only surviving member of Mr. Coulson’s first family is Samuel, the youngest son, who was born in Tennessee, April 3, 1841. He married, on April 14, 1864, Miss Vashti Shaeffer, a sister of Lafayette Shaeffer of Walnut City. They started housekeeping about 2 miles north of Walnut City and five years later moved to Wayne county where they lived for about 13 years. At the end of that time they returned to this county settling on section two in Lincoln township, where they made their home for 22 years. After his wife’s death on Sept. 30, 1894, Samuel Coulson continued to live on the farm until 1904 when he moved to Centerville.
