He grew up in Council Bluffs IA, where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Roberta Austin. Jack earned a BS of Education from Dana College (Blair NE) and a MS of Education in Physical Education from the State University of South Dakota. Early in his career, he played baseball for the St Louis Cardinals farm club, which fed into the major league. During his first position teaching and coaching at Willow Lake SD, Jack was drafted into the Army and served during the Korean conflict. After serving in the military, he returned to South Dakota. A position at Madison SD followed soon after before he accepted a job as head football coach at Westmar College in LeMars IA from 1961 to 1970. During that time at Westmar, Jack had the most successful record of any coach before or since at that college. In 1993, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Westmar College. In 1970, Coach Scott took the helm at Eastern New Mexico University, as head football coach of the Greyhounds. He coached the Hounds from 1970-1977 with 40 wins and four winning seasons during his tenure at Eastern. In addition, during the summer of 1973, he assisted coaching the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. Retiring from coaching in 1978, Jack continued to teach and mentor students at ENMU till his retirement in 1992. He was preceded in death by his father, Oliver Scott and mother, Alice Clark Scott. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Austin Scott and two daughters, Sheryl Scott Jonsson (Gunnar Jonsson) of New Braunfels TX and Jacquelyn Scott Slay (Joel Slay) of San Antonio TX and four grandchildren: Kristian Jonsson of Houston TX, Scott Jonsson of New Braunfels TX, Alex Slay of San Antonio TX and Eric Slay of San Antonio TX. He is also survived by two sisters, Sara Hastings of Council Bluffs IA and Hazel Scott of Council Bluffs IA and a nephew, Timothy Hastings, of Shenandoah IA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association , New Mexico Affiliate, Inc. 525 San Pedro NE, Suite 101, Albuquerque, NM 87108 or the Jack Scott Scholarship Fund, ENMU Foundation, 1500 S. Avenue K, Portales, NM 88130. Personal note: My husband Herm Claussen was blessed to have Jack Scott as his football coach at Westmar college 1964-1968.
