Description : The House of Austin Canons at Bruton was founded in 1142, by William de Mohon, Earl of Somerset. He endowed it with the manor of Bruton and the rectory of St. Mary and St. Aldhelm's Church. It was one of the larger Augustinian priories and became an abbey in 1511. Surrendered in 1539 during the Dissolution, it was bought by Sir Maurice Berkeley and the abbey buildings incorporated into a manor house ("Abbey House") which was itself demolished in 1787.
