Description | : | Deva Victrix was a Roman fortress, or miitary camp, begun in the mid 70s (AD) by Rome's Legio II Adiutrix. After the legion was transferred to the Danube in the 80s, construction was completed over the next few decades by Legio XX Valeria Victrix. The city of Chester grew up around this military camp. By Roman law, burials were to take place outside the city or fortress walls. Not surprisingly, then, many Roman tombstones were unearthed in the area of the north wall during restoration projects in Chester in Victorian times.
