On the 18th day of May that year, Nelson Schofield and his wife deeded for the sum of $4 to Thomas Johnson, Henry John and Hamilton Jackson, Trustees of the African Union Church, a ¼-acre lot of land in West Caln Township for the erection of a meeting house. At the time of its founding, a sizable settlement of African Americans existed in the area, which also supported the foundation of an African Methodist Episcopal congregation at nearby Sandy Hill a decade later.
