Read More	Glasco Sun, July 31, 1947, page 1: Belle Snyder Martin, daughter of Henry and Phoebe Snyder, was born in Indiana, May 6, 1866, and passed away July 22, 1947, at her home in Glasco, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 16 days. She can really be considered one of the community's pioneer women, having come here with her parents in 1867, during the early Indian days, when raids were numerous in this valley. This locality was raided by a band of Cheyennes August 11, 1869. During those years a stockade was built for the early settlers, on the farm where Max Martin, a grandson, now lives, and the family found it necessary to seek its shelter many times. She was married to Joseph Martin March 25, 1885. To this union two sons were born, one of whom died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Martin went to Lane County, Kansas, just after they were married and for eight years, amid many hardships and droughts, remained there, moving back to Glasco in 1894 and living in and near Glasco the rest of their lives. On July 15, 1925, Mr. Martin passed away. Mrs. Martin was the last surviving member of her family. Just three weeks ago her sister, Adah, passed away. In Mrs. Martin's early life she became a member of the Christian church. When the Christian Advent Church was organized she was one of its charter members, and a very faithful and eager worker there as long as the church remained here. A few years ago she joined the Methodist church and has since been a worker there, serving in many ways, and was always present at services as long as she was physically able to attend. She was a member of the D.A.R., also a charter member of the Sunflower Study Club, which she helped to organize in 1917. Up to six or seven years ago Mrs. Martin was a very strong woman, active and always ready to go and help neighbors and friends in sickness and death. It can well be said she spent a full life of work and service, never losing courage or faith to the last. She will be greatly missed and long remembered by many old friends and relatives. She leaves to mourn her passing, a son, Roy; three grandchildren, Margaret Courtney, Max and Dick Martin, all of Glasco; two great-grandchildren, Bill and Dixie Martin, many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends and relatives. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Glasco, Thursday afternoon, July 24, 1947, at 2:30 o'clock, with the Rev. C.L. Moody conducting the service. Mrs. Howe Jordan and Mrs. Fred Harper sang appropriate songs, accompanied by Mrs. O.L. Norton. Pallbearers were Will Pilcher, John Eberhardt, John Harper, Walter Butler, Clarence Bowersox, and Walter Louthan. Acting as flower bearers were Mrs. Lawrence Sheets, Mrs. Guy Hillan, and Mrs. Ed McClellan. Interment was in the family plot in Glasco cemetery, with the Griffith Funeral Home in charge.
